Vatapi was the previous name of Badami, the capital of the Chakukyas. It is well known across the world for its cave temples. The Bhuthnath temple complex, situated on the shores of Agastya Lake, is another picturesque spot. Adjacent settlements rich in history are Pattadkal and Aihole in Badami. There are nineteen monuments in Aihole, two of which are exceptional examples of Chalukyan architecture: Ladkhan Temple and Durga Temple. The Durga temple is home to many idols from Indian mythology, including Mahishasur and Varah. Pattadakal, about 22 miles from Badami, is a temple and shrine complex. Kannada inscriptions from the eighth century can be found here.

Megalithic dolmens in the Badami region attest to the presence of human habitation there even during the Palaeolithic era. The Puranas also depict Vatapi and Agastya tirtha.
