Chawand is a fort some 20 kms from Junnar town in Pune district. The fort stands tall at 1030 meters above mean sea level. There are west facing caves which date back to Satavahan era. It is believed that Chawand is derived from Chamunda one of the Shaktis. The interconnected water cisterns are known as SaptaMatruka. Since the fort has steep cliffs all around, one cannot climb without sufficient gear, hence there are hardly any fortification walls. The Entrance is carved from out of a strong rock. Recently, a NGO from Pune along with support from donors and government agencies have rebuilt a long staircase towards the entrance. This gesture has made the trek much easier for all ages.
The river Kukadi originates at Pur village some 5kms west of the fort of Chawand. There is an ancient temple built at the point of Origination of Kukadi river. The Temple has various carvings of Shiva and Vishnu.
