Valley of Flowers Trek


Valley of Flowers National Park is in Uttarakhand and world famous for endemic flowers and variety of flora. It is located in Garhwal region - Bhyundar valley. The British mountaineers, Frank S. Smythe, Eric Shipton and R. L. Holdsworth lost their way after expedition of Mount Kamet in 1931 and reached here. Joan Margaret Legge was appointed as botanist and arrived here to study 1939. However in a tragic accident, she lost her life here. Later her sister erected a memorial in the valley.

The trek starts from Govind ghat and is spread over six days. The distance of the trek is about 50km. One can also choose to visit Hemkunda, a high altitude lake Gurudwara and a Lakshman temple are built near the lake. Seven snow laden peaks and there glaciers encircle the lake. Saptarshi peak and Hathi Parvat glaciers feed the lake.

Most of the people begin, their Himalayan treks with valley of flowers. When the flowers bloom, and there is a riot of colors. The best time to visit the valley is from Mid July to Mid August. There are number of trails in the valley. The valley opens at 7 am and last entry is allowed till 2 pm.

The flowers like orchids, poppies, primulas, marigold, and daisies cover the ground completely. Forests of rhododendron and birch also cover the parts of park a study determined that there are about 520 species of higher plants out of which 498 are flowering.

The blooming valley of flowers is an absolute feat to see. The photographers from the world visit. The valley for photography and trekkers from the world come foe the ever mesmerizing Himalayas. Zenith odysseys treks here during August and welcomes the patrons.
